Good bye, folks!

maX reaches End-of-life
With the nearing release of Mac OS X Server 2.0, maX will cease to be useful for most people. Like it's predecessor Xnext, maX runs on an operating system that no longer exists. maX will not be available for the new Server OS, based on Mac OS X.
Don't despair. Ambitious people are trying to get the XFree86 project to run nicely on OS X. There is also a commercial X11 server for Mac OS X that will run on the server release as well.

So what was maX anyway?
maX is a port of the X Window System that runs on Apple's old server operating system, Mac OS X Server (Mac OS XS).
It allows you to compile and execute X11 applications on Mac OS XS. You can also display applications running on remote machines, e.g. Netscape from a Linux box.
If you don't know what the X Window System is, have a look at the official X.org site. In this case, you probably don't need maX, however.

maX does not run on the new Mac OS X (or the new server product). It runs on Mac OS X Server 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and presumably 1.2v3.
Read the manual before you download maX.
